The notice, signed on the 7th of June 2010 concerns an extract of Galega officinalis at the daily dose of 153 mg in a food supplement for breastfeeding women in order to promote their secretion of milk.

After having characterized the plant, established its regulatory status in Europe, studied the toxicity data and risks related to the preparation given by the petitioner, AFSSA concluded that the data on the safety of Galega officinalis are insufficient, particularly concerning the identification of the toxic compound, its distribution in the plant, its metabolism after ingestion (particulary its entry into the breast milk) and its toxicological effects.

The Agency issued a major reservation about the safety of the preparation because of its considerable uncertainty on the toxicological risk associated with the use of the extract in breastfeeding women and indirectly in the newborn .
