This randomized and controlled clinical trial has compared the effects of a flavanol-rich chocolate to standard chocolate for improving platelet function. 42 healthy subjects have received an acute dose of a flavan-3-ol-enriched dark chocolate, standard dark or white chocolate in a random order. Platelet aggregation has been reduced by the flavanol-enriched chocolate in men, as the P-selectin expression. A reduction in platelet aggregation has also been observed in women, as an increased in fibrinogen binding. Platelet P-selectin expression has also been reduced by white chocolate consumption. Therefore, flavanol-enriched dark chocolate, but also white chocolate can improve platelet function.
