Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), an organosulfur compound, is used as a dietary supplement for the improvement of mobility in human.

In this study, the effect of MSM on obesity-linked metabolic disorders have been investigated. The goal of the current study was to determine whether MSM has beneficial effects on glucose and lipid homeostasis in obesity-associated pathophysiologic states. High-fat diet-induced obese and genetically obese diabetic db/db mice treated with MSM (1%-5% v/v, by drinking water) were studied. Metabolic parameters involved in glucose and lipid metabolism were determined. Treatment of diet-induced obese mice with MSM leads to a significant decrease in blood glucose levels (cf figure). Diet-induced obese mice treated with MSM are hypersensitive to insulin, as evidenced by decreased serum insulin and an increase in the area above the curve. In db/db mice, a marked impairment in glucose and lipid metabolic profiles is notably ameliorated when MSM is supplemented. These data suggest that MSM has beneficial effects on multiple metabolic dysfunctions, including hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation. Thus, MSM could be the therapeutic option for the treatment of obesity-related metabolic disorders in human such as type 2 diabetes and fatty liver diseases.

The aim of this study was to determine the antifatigue active fraction from Abelmoschus esculentus.

abelmoschus-esculentus

360 Kunming male mice were randomly divided into nine subgroups: normal control subgroup, model subgroup, positive subgroup and the ethanol extracts of A. esculentus with high dose (3.2 g/kg) subgroup, medium dose (1.6 g/kg) subgroup and low dose (0.8 g/kg) subgroup, the polysaccharides of high dose (3.2 g/kg) subgroup, medium dose (1.6 g/kg) subgroup, and the low dose (0.8 g/kg) subgroup. Compared with the model subgroup, other subgroups significantly prolonged swimming time, and high dose polysaccharides administration was the most effective (P < 0.01). High dose polysaccharides significantly increased liver glycogen, serum lactic acid, and serum urea (P < 0.01) in mice. In contrast with model group, the high dose polysaccharides administration could also significantly elevated the parameters of testicles and epididymis (P < 0.01). The results demonstrated that both the ethanol extracts and polysaccharides of A. esculentus have antifatigue effects.

The objectives of this randomized, single-blind, controlled clinical trial were to investigate the effects of chamomile tea consumption on glycemic control and antioxidant status in 64 subjects, between 30 and 60 years, with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The supplemented group (n=32) consumed either chamomile tea (3 g/150 mL hot water) 3 times per day immediately after meals or a water regimen (n=32, controlled group) for 8 weeks. Fasting blood samples, anthropometric measurements, and 3-days, 24-h dietary recalls were collected at the baseline and at the end of the trial.

According to the results, chamomile tea significantly decreased concentration of glycosylated hemoglobin, serum insulin levels, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance, and serum malondialdehyde, compared with control group (all p < 0.05).

Data are present as means ± SE for 32 diabetic patients in each group.

*P < 0.05 for between group comparisons (ANCOVA adjusted for baseline value, intake of oral hypoglycemic agents, and changes of weight and calorie during the study and duration of diabetes).

Total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase activities were significantly increased by 6.81%, 26.16%, 36.71% and 45.06% respectively in chamomile group compared with these variables in control group at the end of the intervention (all p < 0.05). In conclusion, short term intake of chamomile tea has beneficial effects on glycemic control and antioxidant status in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

NOL, Nutraveris Online, the most efficient data solution to create, keep up-to-date and launch your products in the 28 EU member states, informs you:

Andrographis paniculata is an annual herb and widely cultivated in Southeast Asian countries for its medicinal use. It is acknowledged for its effect on upper respiratory tract infection and recent data show other possible uses.

In recent investigations, this herb was found to be effective against Type 1 diabetes mellitus (Type 1 DM). In a non-genetic out-bred Sprague-Dawley rat model was tested the antidiabetic activity of A. paniculata against Type 2 diabetes mellitus (Type 2 DM). Compared to the normal rats, high levels of creatinine, lactate, and allantoin were found in the urine of obese rats, whereas, obese-diabetic rats were marked by high glucose, choline and taurine levels, and low lactate, formate, creatinine, citrate, 2-oxoglutarate, succinate, dimethylamine, acetoacetate, acetate, allantoin and hippurate levels. Treatment of A. paniculata leaf water extract was found to be quite effective in restoring the disturbed metabolic profile of obdb rats back towards normal conditions. This study shows the anti-diabetic potential of A. paniculata plant extract and strengthens the idea of using this plant against the diabetes.

andrographis paniculata

Regarding andrographolides, diterpene of the labdane family obtained from Andrographis paniculata, their effect to recover the cognitive decline was assessed in a rodent model of in a natural model of Alzheimer’s disease. Results suggest that there is an effect of aging on the loss of cognitive function, and this decrease in cognitive function was also related to a decrease in the synaptic functions and an increase in the main hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). More importantly, andrographolides treatments showed the following beneficial effects: (1) recovery of spatial memory and learning performance; (2) recovery of synaptic basal transmission; (3) partial or complete protection of certain synaptic proteins; and (4) a specific neuroprotective effect, including the reduction of phosphorylated tau protein and amyloid beta aggregate maturation in aged degus. Taken together, these results suggest that andrographolides could be used as a potential therapy for AD.
