Almond (Prunus amygdalus) is a source of vitamin E, vitamin B9, polyphenols, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have been shown to prevent or delay the onset of age-associated age dysfunction.

Almond intake may improve memory

The authors of this experiment examined consequently the effects of an almond supplementation in healthy or amnesic rats. Animals received an almond suspension orally (400 mg/kg/d) for four weeks. Amnesia was induced by scopolamine injection.

Results showed that almond administration improve memory retention. Results of the elevated plus maze test and the Morris water maze showed that almond improved the acquisition and retention times. Moreover, brain acetylcholine was increased in the almond-treated animals, suggesting the involvement of cholinergic function in almond-induced memory impairment.

In conclusion, this pre-clinical study suggest that almond may be a dietary source of nutrient that may prevent or delay the onset of age-related memory decline.
