In Europe, vitamin C is associated with authorized health claims on collagen synthesis.

However, such claims are substantiated only by pre-clinical evidences and by symptoms of deficiency. In this study, 8 healthy male subjects have received a placebo or a vitamin C-enriched gelatin (5 or 15g). The authors used a randomized, double-blinded and cross-over design.

Participants received their supplement one hour before an intermittent activity (rope-skipping for 6 min). The pattern of supplementation was repeated three times per day, with at least 6 hours between each session.

Results showed increased serum amount of glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and hydroxylisine, the key amino acids of collagen. Moreover, in vitro studies showed that serum samples obtained from supplemented participants were able to increase collagen content and improve mechanics of engineered ligaments. Finally, participants receiving 15 g of gelatin experienced an increased collagen synthesis.

Therefore, gelatin and vitamin C are able to increase collagen synthesis in healthy subjects. The clinical benefits of these effects in sportsmen or in subjects with knee osteoarthritis remain however to be confirmed.

NOL, Nutraveris Online, the most efficient data solution to create, keep up-to-date and launch your products in the 28 EU member states, used for 10years by more than 500 industry leaders informs you:

A randomized double-blinded controlled clinical study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of a formulation based on sodium alginate/bicarbonate in combination with extracts obtained from Opuntia ficus-indica and Olea europaea associated with polyphenols (Mucosave®), on gastroesophageal reflux-related symptoms.

Mucosave

A total of 118 volunteers (male and female) with moderate gastroesophageal reflux were supplemented with Mucosave® (6 g/day) or placebo for 2 months. The questionnaires Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-Health-Related Quality of Life (GERD-HRQoL) and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Symptom Assessment Scale (GSAS) were self-administered by participants before and at the end of the treatment.

Mucosave® produced statistically significant reduction of GERD-HRQoL and GSAS scores, -56.5% and -59.1%, respectively, in comparison to placebo. Heartburn and acid regurgitation episodes were significantly reduced by Mucosave® (p < 0.01).

Results indicate that Mucosave® formulation provides an effective and well-tolerated treatment for reducing the frequency and intensity of symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux.

NOL, Nutraveris Online, the most efficient data solution to create, keep up-to-date and launch your products in the 28 EU member states, used for 10years by more than 500 industry leaders informs you:

This study investigated the combination of BCAA, arginine, and citrulline on endurance performance in two consecutive days.

Seven male and three female endurance runners ingested 0.17 g·kg(-1) BCAA, 0.05 g·kg(-1) arginine and 0.05 g·kg(-1) citrulline (AA trial) or placebo (PL trial) in a randomized cross-over design. Each trial contained a 5000 m time trial on the first day, and a 10000 m time trial on the second day.

The AA trial had significantly better performance in 5000 m (AA: 1065.7 ± 33.9 s; PL: 1100.5 ± 40.4 s) and 10000 m (AA: 2292.0 ± 211.3 s; PL: 2375.6 ± 244.2 s). The two trials reported similar ratings of perceived exertion. After exercise, the AA trial had significantly lower tryptophan/BCAA ratio, similar NH3, and significantly higher urea concentrations.

BCAA

According to authors, the supplementation could enhance time-trial performance in two consecutive days in endurance runners, possibly through the inhibition of cerebral serotonin synthesis by BCAA and the prevention of excess hyperammonemia by increased urea genesis.

NOL, Nutraveris Online, the most efficient data solution to create, keep up-to-date and launch your products in the 28 EU member states, informs you:

The aim of the study was to investigate the ameliorative potential of different extracts of Hemidesmus indicus to experimental high-fat diet in wistar rats, and their possible mechanism of action.

Male wistar rats were divided into 6 groups (n=6/group) and fed with a standard diet (control), high-fat diet (HFD), high-fat diet supplemented with different extracts and positive control for 9 weeks. Oral administration of methanolic extract of H. indicus (200 mg/kg) offered a significant dose-dependent protection against HFD-induced oxidative stress, as reflected in the levels of catalase (p<0.001 in the aorta, heart and liver), superoxide dismutase (p<0.001 in the aorta, heart and liver), and glutathione peroxidase (p<0.001 in the aorta, heart and liver).

Table: Effect of different extracts of Hemidesmus indicus on plasma lipid profile in control and experimental rats.

Values are expressed as mean ± SEM (n = 6). Data were analyzed using One-way analysis of variance followed by Dunnett’s multiple comparison test. ***p<0.001, *p<0.05; *p<0.05 considered significant; ns: non-significant; All groups are compared with normal control. BW: body weight; TC: total cholesterol; FC: free cholesterol; EC: ester cholesterol.

Hyperlipidemia condition assessed in terms of body weight, total cholesterol, free cholesterol, ester cholesterol, phospholipids, triglycerides, and atherogenic index and the results showed significant differences between HFD and non-HFD fed rats (p<0.001).
