In vitro studies have shown that ethyl acetate parts of aqueous extracts from Prunella vulgaris L. may inhibit acetylcholinesterase and may consequently possess some neurological effects.

Prunella vulgaris

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Prunella vulgaris extract in scopolamine-induced memory impairment in rats.

Results have shown that the extract was able to attenuate scopolamine-induced brain senescence by improving behavioral performance and decreasing brain cell damage. Moreover, the authors confirmed the inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase activity by the Prunella vulgaris extract.

Taking together, these results suggest that Prunella vulgaris may be used as an anti-dementia dietary supplement, notably in subjects with neurodegenerative diseases.
