This randomized and controlled study examined the effects of wheatgrass supplementation on plasma lipids, inflammation and menopausal symptoms in hyperlipidemic women (n = 59). Participants were divided in two groups and received 3.5 g/d of freeze-dried wheatgrass powder or no supplement for 10 weeks.

Wheatgrass

The supplementation reduced total cholesterol (-5.4%), LDL-cholesterol (-4.4%) and triglycerides (-9.5%), but also reduced HDL-cholesterol (-6.0%). In comparison to control, changes in total cholesterol, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B levels were statistically significant (p = 0.043, p = 0.045 and p = 0.016 respectively).

Menopausal symptoms were not significantly affected by the supplementation, with only non-significant changes in vasomotor symptoms (-42%), somatic symptoms (-33%) and psychological symptoms (-50%). However, the study has not been conducted in women with menopausal discomfort, which would explain the lack of effect on these parameters.

In conclusion, the wheatgrass supplementation induced significant reductions in plasma lipids. The clinical significance of these results remained to be clarified.

This dose-response meta-analysis was investigated to assess the association between dietary total flavonoids intake and the risk of mortality.

Ten studies were included. The relative risk (RR) of all-cause mortality for the highest versus lowest category of total flavonoids intake was 0.82 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72-0.92). Dose-response analysis showed that those consuming 200mg/d of total flavonoids had the lowest risk of all-cause mortality.

Relationship between falvonoïds and all-cause mortality in dose-response analysis

Furthermore, a marginally significant association was found between dietary total flavonoids consumption and risk of death from CVD (summary RR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.70-1.03; P = 0.099) and coronary heart diseases (CHD) (summary RR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.54-1.02; P = 0.069), respectively.

Authors concluded the meta-analysis provides strong evidence for the recommendation of consuming flavonoids-rich food to reduce risks of mortality from all causes as part of a healthy diet among general adults.

The aim of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was to investigate the effect of heat-killed Lactobacillus brevis (L. brevis) SBC8803 (SBL88™) intake on skin hydration conditions. The subjects (126 people aged between 21 and 59 years) with slightly higher levels of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) on the forearm were allocated to 3 different groups: placebo or heat-killed L. brevis SBC8803 at a daily dose of 25 or 50 mg, for 12 weeks.

Schedule for the study: Lactobacillus brevis intake & skin hydration

The results revealed that marginal differences were observed in TEWL at the neck in the 25 mg/day group at week 8 and at the lower eye region in the 50 mg/day group at week 4 (p=0.05 and 0.09, respectively, compared with the placebo group). A significant increase in corneal hydration was also observed at the neck in the 25 mg/day group at week 12 (p=0.06, as compared with the placebo group). In the analysis of the subpopulations whose habitual frequency of taking lactic fermentation products was less than once per week, the levels of corneal hydration at the neck (in the 50 mg/day group) and lower eye region (in the 25 mg/day group) were significantly increased at week 12 (p<0.05).

In conclusion, the results of this investigation suggest that oral intake of heat-killed L. brevis SBC8803 is effective at improving skin hydration conditions in populations with low habitual frequency of taking lactic fermentation products.

In this study was investigated the potential for microbe-induced gut-to-brain signalling to modulate the impact of stress on host behaviour and immunoregulation.

social stress

Male C57BL/6 mice treated orally over 28 days with either Lactobacillus rhamnosus (JB-1™) or vehicle were subjected to chronic social defeat and assessed for alterations in behaviour and immune cell phenotype.

Treatment with JB-1 decreased stress-induced anxiety-like behaviour and prevented deficits in social interaction with conspecifics. However, JB-1 did not alter development of aggressor avoidance following social defeat. Microbial treatment attenuated stress-related activation of dendritic cells while increasing IL-10+ regulatory T cells. Furthermore, JB-1 modulated the effect of stress on faecal metabolites with neuroactive and immunomodulatory properties. Exposure to social defeat altered faecal microbial community composition and reduced species richness and diversity, none of which was prevented by JB-1. Stress-related microbiota disruptions persisted in vehicle-treated mice for 3 weeks following stressor cessation.

Authors concluded these data demonstrate that despite the complexity of the gut microbiota, exposure to a single microbial strain can protect against certain stress-induced behaviours and systemic immune alterations without preventing dysbiosis.
