This clinical trial examined the effects of burdock (Arctium lappa L.) on inflammatory status and oxidative stress in patients with knee osteoarthritis.




36 patients (50-70 years) have been enrolled. They received a burdock root tea (3 cups of 150 mL per day, 2 g of roots per cup) or boiled water daily for 42 days. All patients received also acetaminophen and glucosamine.

The supplementation reduced several markers of inflammation and oxidative stress: IL-6 (p = 0.002), hs-CRP (p = 0.003), and malondialdehyde (p < 0.001).

Conversely, the serum total antioxidant capacity (p < 0.001) and the superoxide dismutase activity (p = 0.009) have been increased.

Therefore, these results suggest that burdock may be proposed for the management of osteoarthritis-related inflammation and oxidative stress.
