Urtica dioica

 

This randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled trial examined the effects of an hydro-alcoholic extract of Urtica dioica L. in patients with type 2 diabetes, by focusing on blood glucose control, blood lipids, hepatic enzymes, and nitric oxide levels. 50 women with type 2 diabetes have been enrolled. For 8 weeks, they received a placebo or 5 mL/d of the U. dioica extract (60% ethanol/water v/v).

In comparison to placebo, the extract reduced blood glucose and triglycerides levels (p <0.01 and p < 0.05 respectively).

Moreover, HDL-cholesterol levels have been increased in the U. dioica group (p < 0.05 in comparison to placebo), whereas LDL-cholesterol has not been affected by the supplementation.

In addition, the liver enzyme SGPT (serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase) has been reduced (p < 0.05), while nitric oxide and superoxide dismutase levels have been increased (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05 respectively).

Therefore, these results suggest that stinging nettle, generally used for joint health, can also be interesting for subjects with type 2 diabetes.
