 This randomized and controlled study examined the effects of wheatgrass supplementation on plasma lipids, inflammation and menopausal symptoms in hyperlipidemic women (n = 59). Participants were divided in two groups and received 3.5 g/d of freeze-dried wheatgrass powder or no supplement for 10 weeks.


The supplementation reduced total cholesterol (-5.4%), LDL-cholesterol (-4.4%) and triglycerides (-9.5%), but also reduced HDL-cholesterol (-6.0%). In comparison to control, changes in total cholesterol, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B levels were statistically significant (p = 0.043, p = 0.045 and p = 0.016 respectively).

Menopausal symptoms were not significantly affected by the supplementation, with only non-significant changes in vasomotor symptoms (-42%), somatic symptoms (-33%) and psychological symptoms (-50%). However, the study has not been conducted in women with menopausal discomfort, which would explain the lack of effect on these parameters.

In conclusion, the wheatgrass supplementation induced significant reductions in plasma lipids. The clinical significance of these results remained to be clarified.
