NOL, Nutraveris Online, the most efficient data solution to create, keep up-to-date and launch your products in the 28 EU member states, used for 10years by more than 500 industry leaders informs you:

This randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled trial examined the effects of probiotics on milk cytokine profile and neonatal gastrointestinal function.

66 pregnant women have been recruited. They received a placebo or a probiotic mix for the four weeks prior to the expected delivery date. The probiotic mix contained four strains of lactobacilli (L. paracasei DSM 24733, L. plantarum DSM 24730, L. acidophilus DSM 24735, and L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus DSM 24734), three strains of bifidobacteria (B. longum DSM 24736, B. breve DSM 24732, and B. infantis DSM 24737) and Streptococcus thermophilus DSM 24731.

The supplementation had a significant impact of IL6 mean concentration in colostrum, and on IL10 and TGF-β1 values in mature breast milk. Fecal sIgA mean values were higher in newborns whose mothers took the probiotic product than in the control group.

Probiotic maternal supplementation seems to decrease incidence of infantile colic (10% vs. 40%, p = 0.007) and regurgitation in infants (23% vs. 57%, p = 0.008).

Therefore, probiotics consumed during the last 4 weeks of pregnancy may help to improve immunity and gastrointestinal function in newborns.
