Curcuminoids are natural phenols provided notably by Curcuma longa. These compounds are known for their strong antioxidant properties, and have been used for the management of joint health. This meta-analysis focused on the effectiveness of curcuminoids for the management of knee osteoarthritis.

Curcuma

Seven studies have been included (797 participants). In comparison to placebo, curcumonoids have been shown to reduce knee pain (standardized mean difference: -3.45; 95% CI: -5.52 to -1.38, p = 0.001) and to improve quality of life (mean difference in Lequesne index: -2.69; 95% CI: -3.48 to -1.90, p < 0.00001).

There were significantly fewer effects on pain relief, knee stiffness and physical function with curcuminoids compared with ibuprofen. Significant improvements in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index total scores, with significant reductions in the use of rescue medication were also observed with curcuminoids.

Therefore, this meta-analysis shows that curcuminoids are effective for the management of knee pain and quality of life of patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Symposium on biomass and biorefinery to actives and ingredients

6th – 7th july – Centre des congrès du Chapeau Rouge – Quimper

Intervention of Thomas Pauquai,  SESSION IV : MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR INDUSTRIAL BIOMASS UPGRADING, friday 7th July, at 2 pm:

How the European Union’s new novel food regulation aims to quicken time to market and boost innovation: what consequences for biomass?

Thomas PAUQUAI

Thomas PAUQUAI,has a PhD in Physiology & Physiopathology from the Pierre & Marie Curie University, Paris VI, France. At the head of Health Claim & Food Safety department, he and his team prepare and submit successful Health Claim and Novel Food dossiers, formulate innovative food supplements, submit patents, and write scientific argumentation records justifying the efficacy and safety of health nutrition products.

Bio2actives symposium challenge participants in Bio2actives symposium to question and reflect on the different opportunities to transform biomasses (terrestrial or marine, animal or plant) for the development of new actives and ingredients (for food, feed, petfood and nutrition businesses) and to tend to “zero waste”.

NOL, Nutraveris Online, the most efficient data solution to create, keep up-to-date and launch your products in the 28 EU member states, used for 10years by more than 500 industry leaders informs you:

Migraine is a neuroinflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent headache attacks. Evidences show TNF-α play a role in neuroimmunity pathogenesis of migraine. TNF-α action resulted in neuro-inflammation and neurogenic pain.

ω-3 fatty acids and curcumin exert neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects via several mechanisms including suppression of TNF-α gene expression and its serum levels.

The aim of this study was to assess the synergistic effects of ω-3 fatty acids and nano-curcumin on TNF-α gene expression and serum levels in 74 episodic migraine patients, for 2 months.

A total of 4 groups received either ω-3 fatty acids, nano-curcumin, and combination of them or placebo. The results showed that the combination of ω-3 fatty acids and nano-curcumin downregulated TNF-α mRNA significantly in a synergistic manner (p < 0.05). A significant greater reduction in serum levels of TNF-α were observed in the combination group, but no significant differences in other groups. In addition, a much greater reduction in attack frequency was found in the combination group (p < 0.001).

The fold change of TNF-α gene expression in PBMC extracted mRNA

The fold change of TNF-α gene expression in PBMC extracted mRNA. A much greater reduction has been observed in the combination group. However, based on the Kruskal–Wallis test, these differences in TNF-α fold change among groups are not statistically significant.

These findings indicated that ω-3 fatty acids and curcumin supplementation can be considered as a new promising approach in migraine management.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Gymnema sylvestre consumption on metabolic syndrome, insulin secretion, and insulin sensitivity.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was carried out in 24 patients (without pharmacological treatment), 30-60 years old, with diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Patients were randomly assigned to receive G. sylvestre or placebo twice daily in 300 mg capsules for a total of 600 mg/day for 12 weeks.

Gymnema sylvestre

After G. sylvestre administration, significant decreases in body weight (81.3 ± 10.6 kg vs. 77.9 ± 8.4 kg, p = 0.02), BMI (31.2 ± 2.5 kg/m² vs. 30.4 ± 2.2 kg/m², p = 0.02), and VLDL levels (0.45 ± 0.15 mmol/dL vs. 0.35 ± 0.15 mmol/dL, p = 0.05) were observed, without modifying the components of metabolic syndrome, insulin secretion, and insulin sensitivity.

In conclusion, Gymnema sylvestre administration decreased body weight, BMI, and VLDL levels in subjects with metabolic syndrome, without changes in insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity.
