Extra virgin olive oil is known to reduce post-prandial glycaemia. To better understand the mechanisms of action, the authors of this study examined the effects of oleuropein on post-prandial glycaemia.

20 healthy subjects have been included in this randomized, placebo-controlled and crossover study. They received a placebo or 20 mg oleuropein immediately before lunch. After Two hours, subjects who received oleuropein had lower blood glucose and dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 activity, and higher insulin and glucagon-like peptide-1 levels compared to placebo. Moreover, Nox2 activity, 8-iso-PGF2α and platelet p47phox phosphorylation were lower after oleuropein than after placebo.

 

Consequently, the authors hypothesized that oleuropein improves post-prandial glycaemia via hampering Nox2-derived oxidative stress.
