The aim of this double-blinded, randomized and placebo-controlled study was to assess the effects of omega 3 fatty acids in overweight/obese women with depression. 65 women have been enrolled in this 12-week trial. They received a placebo or omega 3 fatty acids (1080 mg EPA and 720 mg DHA per day).

Results showed that the supplementation reduced depressive symptoms compared with placebo (p = 0.05). Moreover, a reduction in body weight has been measured in the supplemented group in comparison to placebo (-3.07 ± 3.4 kg vs. -1.16 ± 2.7 kg, p = 0.049). However, a follow-up visit one month after the end of the supplementation showed that omega 3 fatty acids were not effective to prevent weight regain.


Nevertheless, these results suggest that omega 3 fatty acids may be a safe solution to reduce body weight and depression in overweight or obese women.
