This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study aimed to investigated the effects of pro-anthocyanidins from Acacia mearnsii bark extract.

Sixty-six healthy subjects experiencing uncomfortable skin and dry skin symptoms received either Acacia bark extract tablets (containing 245 mg of A. mearnsii proanthocyanidin-equivalent) or placebo for 8 weeks.

Variation in transepidermal water loss

Variation in transepidermal water loss on the face in the intervention (black bar, n = 30) and placebo (white bar, n = 30) groups at 8 weeks after intake. Bars display the standard error of the mean.

After 4 weeks, the symptom/feeling score of dermatology life quality index, subjective symptoms related to uncomfortable skin, and the desire to scratch were significantly reduced in the A. mearnsii supplemented group compared to the placebo group. At the end of the experiment, the A. mearnsii supplemented group exhibited significant lower stratum corneum, transepidermal water loss on facial skin compared to the placebo group.

In conclusion, the intake of Acacia mearnsii bark extract reduced skin water loss and improved dry and uncomfortable skin.

This randomized open-label crossover study  evaluated among 32 healthy adults the effects of mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) consumption twice daily for ten days, compared to meat consumption, on gastrointestinal tolerance, short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, laxation, and fecal microbiota composition.

No differences in breath hydrogen, stool frequency, consistency, fecal pH, or SCFA concentrations between the two diets were noted, but the mushroom diet led to greater overall gastrointestinal symptoms than the meat diet on days one and two. The mushroom-rich diet resulted in higher average stool weight (p = 0.002) and a different fecal microbiota composition compared to the meat diet, with greater abundance of Bacteroidetes (p = 0.0002) and lower abundance of Firmicutes (p = 0.0009).

Laxation markers for fecal samples collected days 6 through 10.

Laxation markers for fecal samples collected days 6 through 10.

In conclusion, mushroom consumption may impact laxation in healthy adults and affect the gut microbiota.

This meta-analysis includes 11 randomized and controlled trials (622 participants) assessing the effects of saffron supplementation on cardiovascular risk factors. The inclusion criteria were: studies assessing the effects of saffron and/or its constituents on blood lipid profile, glycemic parameters, blood pressure and anthropometric indices.

Saffron

Results have shown that saffron reduces diastolic blood pressure (-1.24 mmHg, 95% CI: -1.51 to -0.96), body weight (-1.29 kg, 95% CI: -2.14 to -0.44) and waist circumference (-1.68 cm, 95% CI: -3.31 to -0.04).

A reduction in fasting plasma glucose levels has been highlighted in high quality studies only. No change in lipid profile, fasting insulin, systolic blood pressure and BMI has been noted.

Therefore, saffron has beneficial effects on several outcomes related with cardiovascular diseases.

This randomized, double-blind clinical trial aimed to determine the effect of cinnamon on relieving dysmenorrhea.

Volunteers received Cinnamon (capsules contained 1000mg cinnamon) or placebo (1000 mg starch) during the first 72 h of menstruation for 2 cycles continuously. The Visual Analogue Scale was used to determine the severity of pain.

The mean intensity of primary dysmenorrhea at different times according to groups

The mean intensity of primary dysmenorrhea at different times according to groups

The results showed the mean intensity of dysmenorrhea significantly decreased over time in both groups (time: p < 0.001) and this reduction was significantly different over time between 2 groups (time*group: p = 0.02). There is significantly more reduction in the intervention group. Also the pain reduction in the intervention group was significantly lower than the placebo group after the first treatment (p = 0.001) and the second treatment (p = 0.002) compared to before treatment.

In conclusion cinnamon can reduce the intensity of primary dysmenorrhea.

In order to determine the effects of St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) on emotional processing, the authors of this study recruited 48 healthy adults. They received a placebo or St. John’s wort for 7 days. The supplementation consisted in 300 mg of LI 160 thrice daily, a St. John’s wort extract standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin and 3-5% hyperforin. After 7 days of supplementation, they completed a battery of tasks to measure emotional processing and other elements of cognition.

St. John’s wort

Results showed that St John’s wort had similar effects than other antidepressant, with notably reduced recognition of disgusted faces and attention to fearful faces, and increased memory for positive words. Regarding cognitive function, an effect of the supplementation has been measured on working memory.

These results suggest that a subchronic treatment with St. John’s wort produces a positive shift in the processing of emotional information, similar to other antidepressant.
