A French observational study, called the «NutriNet-Santé » study and which began in May 2009, aims at the inclusion of 500 000 adults over a total duration of 5 years in order to establish possible links between nutrition and health. This study is coordinated by Pr Serge Hercberg (unit U557 Inserm/Inra/Cnam/Université Paris 13).

Through internet, participants answer questionnaires about their diet, physical activity, body weight, height and about some factors which are possibly involved in food behavior.

On the 27th of November 2009, 104 356 subjects were already included. Although it was too early to conclude about links between nutrition and health, these first results allowed to highlight strong discrepancies between regions such as a North-South gradient for the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

This study could lead food companies to adapt the nutritional characteristics of their products depending on the French region of launching.
